What is a Job Search Coach?

You have a career plan, a great resume, and now you are ready to really start looking for your next job.  Now what? The process can be challenging whether you are looking for the same type of job, making a career transition, or returning back into the workforce.

I thoroughly understand the hiring process, so I organize the process into manageable components or “baby steps.”    I really do understand all aspects of the selection process on how hiring managers pick their new employees.

I have been helping people find new jobs for 12 years, starting when I was a recruiter at Robert Half.  I established Tools for Transition in 2003 so I can work with people individually.

  • Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW). There are about 400 of us in the country.
  • Certified Employment Interview Professional (CEIP).  There are about 85 of us in the country.
  • Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC).  There are very few of us in the country.

How does the process work?

We will develop a strategy and action plan to help you identify new opportunities, with a particular focus on how to network into companies.  The biggest mistake people make is to just apply for jobs online with job board or company websites.  We can start with:

  • You will define your optimal work environment.  This can include commute parameters, company size, industries and salary requirements.
  • We will develop a detailed plan on how to identify new opportunities.  This involves both company and industry research. I can do this, or teach you how to do it.
  • Then we will strategize on how to approach each one. How do you work with your professional and personal contacts to make contact with decision makers?
  • You will make the contacts and work diligently until you get an interview!  Then I can provide interview coaching (See my separate page with information.)

How do I use my new resume and other documents?

Just having a great resume, LinkedIn profile, and other documents is just the first step. I can provide coaching on how to use each of these. How can you make changes to your new resume without ending up with 30 versions? And it is not enough to just say “I’m on LinkedIn.”  This needs to be a cornerstone for your career search.

I cannot give you a guarantee that you will find a job because there are too many factors outside of my control that impact the process. I have never kept formal statistics about my clients on how they landed their new job.

However, people regularly get back to let me know about their new job. They then refer friends, family and colleagues.  Many come back for more services in the future. Then I know I have done my own work very well.  This is why I do what I do – so I can make a real difference in other people’s lives.

The job search process requires commitment, energy, discipline, persistence, and staying organized.  If you are focused on these things, you will find your new job.  But I will support you every step of the way to provide energy, information, ideas, and accountability.
